Lesson Plan Example

       

Directed Lesson:
    Have the student turn to Page 24 and point to the numeral.
    If necessary help the student read the numeral.
    Have the student point to the small consonant m letter and the capital
      consonant M  letter on the top left side of the page.

    Have the student name the letters.
    Have the student point to the key word picture man at the top middle
      of the page.

    Have the student say the key word man emphasizing the consonant m sound.
    Have the student point to the consonant m letter on the top right side
      of the page  and say the consonant m sound.

    Have the student say the name of the consonant m letter, the key
      word picture man and the consonant m sound.

    Have the student place either the rectangular or the triangular marker
      under the first line.

    Remind the student that letter sounds, not words, will be read.
    Remind the student that lines are read from left to right.
    Have the student read the first line, blending the beginning consonant
      m sounds + short vowel sounds.

ma          mi            mu

    Have the student move the marker down to the second line.
    Have the student read, blending the beginning consonant m
      sounds + short vowel sounds.
me          mu            mi

    Have the student continue with the third and fourth lines.
    Blending the beginning consonant sound or sounds with the short vowel
      sound is difficult for many students. If needed have the student use
      the "Hands-on Packet" activities on Appendix Page A-7.

    DO NOT LET THE STUDENT SKIP THIS SKILL. Mastering blending and
      learning the CVC short vowel pattern is essential for the beginning reader.
