Objectives:
1. To teach the name for the consonant r letter
2. To teach the key word picture rabbit for the consonant r letter
3. To teach the consonant r sound (er)
4. To teach the blending of the beginning consonant r sound (er)
with the short vowel sounds
5. To reteach the CVC short vowel pattern by adding a final
consonant sound to form words
6. To teach the sight word *a
7. To teach the schwa sound for the sight word *a (short u sound)
8. To teach the continuous stroke method of manuscript writing
for both the small consonant r letter and the capital consonant
R letterTeacher Notes:
The consonant r letter is a continuant letter. Remember that a continuant letter may be produced in isolation and has a sound that can be prolonged as long as there is breath supply. The consonant r letter has the er sound as in the key word rabbit.
If the ru sound were used for the consonant r sound it would be difficult for the student to sound out (decode) the word ran. Consonant letters do not have the short u sound (schwa) after the consonant sound.
THE STUDENT MUST NOT SAY RU (THE CONSONANT R SOUND + THE SHORT VOWEL U SOUND) FOR THE CONSONANT R SOUND.
Correct example: r + a = ra Incorrect example: ru + a = rua
Teach the correct consonant sounds for the alphabet
letters.
Remember to teach the student to sound out (decode)
words starting at the beginning of the word only. Never draw a student's attention
to the middle or end of a word. Words are sounded out (decoded) from left to
right just as lines and sentences are read from left to right.
Reteach the first vowel pattern rule.
CVC Short Vowel Pattern Rule: When a word has only one vowel and the word begins and ends with a consonant letter or letters, the vowel will usually say its short sound. (ram)
