"Hands-On Packet"
Lesson Plan

       

Directed Lesson:
    Have the student turn to Page 77.
    Have the student decode and read the title of the story.
    Explain to the student that the story "Fred" is a two-page story.
    Have the student decode and read the story silently.
    Ask comprehension questions.
    Have the student read the complete story.
    Have the student close the book. (It's time to write a language
      experience story.)

    Direct the student to wind up the toy frog.
    Have the student see the frog hop.
    Ask the student questions about the frog that hops. Direct the student to
      answer using complete sentences.

    What do you see? (I see a frog. I see a fat frog.)
    What does the frog have? (The frog has spots.)
    What can the frog do? (The frog can hop.)
    What does the frog do when it quits hopping? (The frog stops. The frog rests.
       The frog sits.)

    What can you see the frog do? (I can see the frog hop. I can see the frog sit.
      I can see the frog rest.)

    What can a frog sit on? (A frog can sit on a pad.)
    Where is the frog? (The frog is in a pond.)
    Give the student primary writing picture paper and have the student
       write name on the first line.

    Have the student turn the paper over.
    Remind the student that sentences begin with capital letters, that
     letters are written very closely together, that words have two-finger
     spaces between them and that sentences end with a period,
     a question mark, or an exclamation point.

    Have the student tell something about the frog orally using a complete
      sentence.

    Direct the student to try to use words with sounds that have been introduced.
    Have the student write the sentence on the paper.
    Have the student write two more sentences about what the frog can do. (The
      student may write more sentences.)

    Express how exciting it is that the student is writing stories independently.
    Have the student read the language experience story.


    Have the student turn to Page 79.
    Introduce the ending consonant ft blend letters and the picture of the raft.
    Direct the student to decode and to read ending consonant ft blend words.
    Discuss word meanings with the student.
