Lesson Plan Example

Objectives:
             1. To teach the CVCV long vowel pattern
             2. To teach the magic e
             3. To introduce dialogue with quotation marks
             4. To introduce the swing line that divides compound words into two separate words
             5. To introduce contractions

Teacher Notes:
The CVCV(consonant, vowel, consonant, vowel) long vowel pattern is fun to introduce. If you want to be creative, dress like a magician. Pull a big magic e out of a black top hat. The e can be written with a sparkling marker. When the magic e is added at the end of many CVC short vowel pattern words, "PRESTO", the first vowel changes from a short vowel sound to a long vowel sound. The first vowel says its name. It's MAGIC! The magic e is silent.

CVCV Long Vowel Pattern Rule: When a word has two vowels divided by a consonant and the last vowel is the vowel e letter, the vowel e letter usually makes the first vowel long and it is silent.
(plane)

Have the student look for CVCV long vowel pattern words in magazines, newspapers, and books.

TEACH VOWEL PATTERNS!

Expect the student to read with fluency and expression in each lesson. Do not accept word-by-word reading. If a complete story is too long for the student to read independently, assign one page at a time. Have the student read one page aloud before the second page is assigned. The goal is to have the beginning reader achieve success in each lesson.

TEACH TO THE STUDENT!

The CVCV long vowel pattern may be used for dictation if you tell the student that the dictated long vowel words will be the CVCVpattern.
DO GIVE POSITIVE DIRECTION IN EACH LESSON WHEN IT IS NEEDED.
